Employability
Welcome to our class site!
This Employability class is part of a collaboration between Tri-Valley Regional Occupational Program (ROP) in Livermore CA and Inmate Services of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department. The class is one of several that are taught at the Community Re-entry Center in Oakland to inmates who have been transferred from Santa Rita Jail and are getting ready to leave the jail system.
The goal of Employability is to help students conduct a serious, professional job search. All students will learn to identify their needs, deal with positive and negative stress, prepare a personal budget, define their job skills and work values, explore and set career goals, uncover job leads by using networking and direct employer contact, and communicate their qualifications, desire to work, and a positive attitude to employers.
One component of the class is teaching personal responsibility. Students are taught to be up-front and honest about their criminal history. Many students believe they will not get a job if they tell the truth about themselves, but in the Employability class, they learn that taking responsibility for their actions, not blaming anyone else, and telling the truth are the best strategies for getting and keeping a job.
